Haven't smoked for over 30 years and still got it is hard to explain. Working around printing presses and alot of chemicals might have been something. Still don't appreciate someone saying oh it's from smoking. Being secondhand smoke didn't help either. There is alot to read.

My dad was a smoker, I smoked a bit in the 1970s but quit. My brother never smoked. My brother got lung cancer stage 3, no one in the family accused him of his disease. But it put me on my toes to get scans earlier. So my cancer was surgery only 3 years ago. My brother has not had return of his disease in 10 years but had to have chemo and radiation. We both get scanned every 6 months.
I don’t talk about my lung cancer as much anymore. My family live far away and several cousins are dead.
But I know smoking is linked to lung cancer but there are many causes. My family has had many cancers. This may be a genetic thing. At 78 everyone has something wrong.
I just know t get scanned for everything.

Do people judge those with lung cancer based on smoking history?

Unfortunately, yes—many people with lung cancer experience stigma and judgment related to smoking. This is a real and hurtful issue that many MyLungCancerTeam members have faced.

A MyLungCancerTeam member shared: "I get a bit upset when people hear lung cancer and assume, 'Oh, you're a smoker.'" They went on to describe multiple exposures beyond smoking that likely contributed to their cancer, but noted how quickly people focus solely on smoking status.

There's significant "victim blaming in lung cancer" where people feel others think "you brought this disease upon yourself." This stigma can make people feel they need to defend themselves or stay quiet about their diagnosis.

The reality is clear: no one deserves lung cancer, regardless of smoking history. Lung cancer has many risk factors including:

- Secondhand smoke exposure
- Radon
- Air pollution
- Chemical exposures at work
- Family history

Many people develop lung cancer who never smoked at all. Even for those who did smoke, judgment isn't helpful or fair.

You're not alone in experiencing this stigma, and it's important to connect with supportive communities who understand that lung cancer affects everyone, smoker or not.

I totally agree with that they dont bother to scan smokers or ex smokers in the uk so how are we meant to know when lung gcancer starts to form .They dont other scans because then know one make any money out of the crap medications that only work for a couple of years.
