Hey alH: I received chemo thur Iv's. No port. The doctor just said, let's see how this goes. I had a lobectomy for stage 1 lung cancer in 2017. At that My pulmonary Dr recommended I receive Chemo I addition to surgery. So I did. I had a few rounds of chemo and that was it. My cancer is stable. But, my vains, where they put the IV were scared for a few years. There consequences with a port and without. It's an indidual decision between you and your doctor.
I had my port through all my treatments. They never asked or told me why I should have one. I was black and blue for a long time when they inserted the port. I still had it for some time after I was done with my treatments. Somebody asked me: Did you have your port cleaned every month while you still had it? No, nobody told me. Boy, that did not sit right with me. I had it removed right away, and again... I was black and blue... I was not very happy...
3+ years of immunotherapy, my veins said "no more"....port placed then!
Does everyone with lung cancer need a chemo port?
Not everyone receiving chemotherapy has a chemo port. The search results mention that chemotherapy is typically given through an IV line, but they don't specifically discuss ports as a requirement for all patients.
The method of receiving chemotherapy can vary based on Show Full Answer
I opted not to have a port placed since I only had 4 rounds of chemo. I've had no problems with using veins in my arms with the chemo treatment and contiing Keytruda.
