Fatigue, bad taste in mouth, but not major or for a long time. I took my anti-nausea medication right after chemo treatments for at least 2-3 days. I took them rather I felt nausea or not. It helped I had no issues with feeling sick. They say it’s best to take prior to than once you’re sick, it takes longer to feel the effects of the medication.

Stay very well hydrated. Eat as well as you can and nap if you feel like it.

How harsh will weekly chemo and daily radiation be for your 82-year-old husband with stage 3B lung cancer, and how can you help him?

Combined chemotherapy and radiation (called chemoradiation) can be challenging, especially for older adults. Common side effects may include:

* Fatigue and weakness
* Nausea and loss of appetite
* Skin rash or irritation where radiation is targeted
* Hair loss (though not always with targeted therapy)
* Increased risk of infections
* Mouth sores or difficulty swallowing
* Diarrhea or constipation

Older adults tend to experience more intense side effects because their bodies may already be managing age-related health changes. However, many people tolerate treatment well with proper support. To help make treatment easier for your husband:

* Encourage rest when he needs it - fatigue is cumulative and gets worse as treatment progresses
* Help him maintain good nutrition by working with a dietitian to keep his weight stable and energy up
* Keep him physically active on good days, but don't let him overdo it
* Stay in close contact with his cancer care team about any side effects - medications can help manage nausea, pain, and other symptoms
* Help him stay hydrated and maintain good circulation, which helps chemo work effectively
* Watch for signs of infection (fever, unusual bruising) since chemo affects blood cell counts
* Attend appointments with him to help remember information and advocate for his needs

A MyLungCancerTeam member shared that staying physically active and maintaining routines helped them feel better during treatment. Regarding protecting yourself: Chemotherapy itself isn't contagious or transmissible through casual contact. You can safely hug, kiss, and care for your husband. However, be mindful that his immune system will be weakened, so practice good hygiene to avoid exposing him to infections - wash your hands frequently and avoid contact if you're feeling unwell.

The emotional toll of caregiving is real too. Make sure you're also getting rest, asking for help when needed, and taking care of your own mental health during this time.
