Members strongly recommended purchasing a Medigap supplemental plan for those on Original Medicare, explaining that while Medicare Part B covers 80% of allowed costs, the remaining 20% can quickly become financially overwhelming during cancer treatment without supplemental coverage. Several members shared their personal experiences, with monthly premiums ranging from around $200 for basic supplements to $800 for comprehensive coverage, and emphasized that comparing HMO versus PPO options, working with licensed Medicare agents at no cost, and carefully reviewing Annual Notices of Changes can help find the best fit for individual needs and budgets. A recurring theme was the value of planning ahead, asking questions, attending seminars, and seeking guidance from trusted resources like Medicare School or licensed agents who understand state-specific rules and can navigate the confusing landscape of coverage options.

Hey BrigitteM: Yes purchase a supplement if you have traditional Medicare. It will cover the twenty percent Medicare will not pay. The price of supplements goes up every year as you get older. But, to me it's worth all the sacrifices I've made to keep my supplement in place.

Hi Brigitte, Yes, Medigap is highly advisable . Depending on your plan Blue Cross Blue Shield covers additional costs that Medicare doesn’t cover.

All my cancer treatment was fully covered, as I have both Parts A, B and pay extra for Part B supplemental. My total monthly insurance is pretty high, about $800 per month. I decided to go high when I retired, as cancer runs in my family. Also I never pay anything except outpatient oral prescriptions which are not covered by my Part D. Medical insurance is confusing, as there are so many different types. Mickeyfin
