"What is the likelihood of lung cancer spreading and what are common sites of metastasis?"
Lung cancer often isn't detected until it has grown significantly, which can lead to spreading (metastasis). About 53% of people are diagnosed with distant lung cancer, meaning it has already spread to other areas of the body.
The bones are the most common site where lung cancer spreads, with 40-50% of lung cancer patients developing bone metastases. Of these cases, 63% involve the spine. For non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) specifically, Stage 4 indicates cancer has spread beyond the lungs. This can include:
• Spread to the other lung
• Cancer cells in fluid around the heart
• Cancer cells in fluid around the lung
• Spread to distant organs like brain, liver, or bones
• Multiple tumors outside the chest
If you're experiencing new symptoms, it's important to discuss them with your healthcare team to help manage your condition effectively.

The best thing I ever did was get multiple scans of my heart and chest at age 60, colonoscopy age 40, all as preventive measures. I have had 4 life threatening illnesses, all successfully treated due to preventive care and testing. I am a medical researcher, which made me more aware of prevention. It is terrible to know that over 50% of USA lung cancer patients are Stage 4, having traveled outside the original site. Immunotherapy can help length and quality of life, sometimes for many years. I would go for it, to see how it worked for me.
