That's a really honest and brave question to ask, and it deserves a thoughtful answer.

With NSCLC, what happens at the end of life can vary quite a bit from person to person. There isn't one single way it unfolds — it depends on the stage of the cancer, where it has spread, and any other health conditions present.
Some of the more common experiences include:
- Breathing difficulties — as the cancer affects lung function, breathlessness can become more pronounced
- Fluid around the lungs — this can cause a feeling of pressure or difficulty breathing
- Spread to other organs — if cancer reaches the heart or major blood vessels, it can affect heart function
- General decline — fatigue, weight loss, and weakness are also common as the body is under strain The good news is that palliative care teams are very skilled at managing these symptoms and keeping people as comfortable as possible. It's absolutely worth having an open conversation with your oncologist or palliative care nurse about what to expect — they can give guidance specific to your situation.
You don't have to face these questions alone. MyLungCancerTeam is full of people who've had these same thoughts and can offer real support. 💙

You may have pain but that can be treated with morphine. My brother died at home but had nurses come to see him, give drugs as needed.
My father and mother both died in hospitals. They were kept pain free. My mom went unconscious for hours before his heart stopped. Pneumonia can kill people too.

I question the same. I don’t want treatment of any kind. Stage 4 NSCLC. I just don’t want to be in pain. I have a DNR in place and a will
