Maypearl, TX

I don’t know my dad’s exact diagnosis except for he has lung cancer. He had a ct scan and they immediately wanted him to go for a pet scan which is happening today. I don’t know when we’ll get the results. He tries not to worry me with his condition due to me being pregnant. He is the type where he doesn’t want much time spent on him although he is sick, the family members he’s been living haven’t be caring him the way he needs, but I am moving him near me to better care for him.

What are the best foods and drinks for someone with lung cancer and spreading tumors?

It's wonderful that you're preparing to care for your dad during this challenging time. There's no one-size-fits-all diet, but focusing on nutrient-dense foods can help him maintain strength and energy.

Key nutritional priorities include:

- High-protein foods to combat weight and muscle loss (eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts, lean meats, beans)
- Fruits and vegetables for anti-inflammatory antioxidants, especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower
- Complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, and beans for sustained energy
- Healthy fats to support calorie intake

Foods to minimize:

- Alcohol, red meat, and processed meats
- Refined sugars (opt for complex carbs instead)
- Fast food when possible

Small, frequent meals throughout the day may work better than three large meals if appetite is an issue. If he experiences side effects:

- Cold or frozen snacks like ice pops can help with nausea and dry mouth
- Ginger-containing foods or drinks may reduce nausea
- High-calorie shakes can provide nutrition when he doesn't feel like eating

A MyLungCancerTeam member shared: "I had a great dietitian at my oncologist's office who helped me with high-calorie shakes and a list of spices that helped flavor food."

Consider asking his healthcare team for a referral to a registered dietitian who can create a personalized plan based on his specific needs and any treatment side effects. Food safety is also crucial during treatment, so ensure proper food handling and avoid raw or undercooked foods.
