Recently, I did small amount of yard work and by accident I was infected by mold spores. So I got sick within hours. It feels just like bronchitis but not caused by a bacteria. Lots of coughing and expelling mucus. I'm getting a shot from my doctor. (Antifungal), plus some steroids. So anyone with lung disease beware of all those nasty mold spores. They have a mighty punch.

Members shared powerful stories about mold exposure leading to serious fungal lung infections, with symptoms that mimic bronchitis or viral illness but require antifungal treatment rather than antibiotics. Several members described harrowing experiences, including one who developed mushroom-like blooms in their lungs from inhaling cedar mulch spores, another who has lived with incurable Aspergillus fungal pneumonia since a COVID infection, and a tragic loss of a friend to untreated mulch exposure. A recurring theme was the critical importance of wearing masks during yard work or in public spaces, understanding that compromised immune systems put people at higher risk, and recognizing that mold spores are everywhere and can cause life-threatening illness in vulnerable individuals.

Mold exposure can indeed cause respiratory symptoms that come on quickly, especially in people with lung conditions. The spores can travel through the air and when inhaled, may trigger respiratory reactions including coughing and mucus production. Your quick action in seeking medical treatment with antifungal medication and steroids is exactly the right approach. To reduce exposure to mold spores, especially when doing yard work, consider these preventive steps:
- Use a dehumidifier or air conditioning to lower humidity levels
- Ensure good ventilation in your home
- Fix any leaks promptly
- Wear protective gear when doing yard work
- Consider avoiding outdoor activities on days with high mold counts

If you experience any new or worsening symptoms, don't hesitate to contact your doctor, as they can help prevent complications and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

What an interesting question Cecil! Yes! About 20 years ago I was spreading some cedar mulch under some yews on a very hot day. The mulch was in plastic bags and was “sweating” from the heat. Five days later I experienced terrible pain in my chest (lungs). Breathing was difficult and painful. Lung scan showed mushroom like blooms in my lungs. Antibiotics cleared it up in a couple of days. Diagnosis was allergy reaction in my lungs from inhaling mold spores. The mushroom like blooms were apparently hives. I’ve since learned cedar mulch is the worst if inhaled!!

Yes, Wendy: the environment of warmth/humidity create perfect breeding grounds for mold. I only recently understood the relationship between fungus, bacteria and viruses. How they can work alone or together. The symptoms of all simular. Everyone experiences and bodies are unique. So it's best to learn what you can so to survive.

Yes Vivian: it's knowledge I'll never forget. I'm going to wear a mask in the yard. Avoiding moldy leaves.
Another way to survive with lung issues. Be aware and stay safe.
