Members shared their varied experiences with new lung nodules appearing years after initial stage 1 adenocarcinoma treatment, with timelines ranging from one year of being nodule-free to recurrences appearing four or six years later. Several members described their monitoring routines of regular CT scans every six months, with some experiencing slow-growing nodules that eventually required additional surgery, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies like Tagrisso for EGFR mutations. A recurring theme was the anxiety of wondering when or if cancer might return, balanced by gratitude for early detection, the importance of vigilant follow-up care, and the power of staying positive through uncertainty.

Thank you all for the replies. I am at 8 months post op lobectomy stage 1 adenocarcinoma. Even at stage 1 its hard not to think, "when and where will it come back". Also feel blessed that it was caught so early...

I'm EGFR pdl1 exon 19. I was stage 1 in 2015 had a lower right lobectomy. I grew a tumor every other year and had a total of 3 lung surgeries before I started chemo. Then I got a new oncologist that gave me tagrisso. A TKI to stop tumors. I've enjoyed the last 4 years but now have a new progression in my lymph nodes. No new nodules so thats good. Waiting to biopsy the node in my chest

I had adenocarcinoma stage 1 with a segmentectomy of lower left lung in 2017. I have had 6 month scans ever since. In 2021 the scan showed 2 nodules that were starting to increase in size. They were carefully monitored but in the fall of 2023 they decided to biopsy and they were positive for cancer. I had lobectomy surgery on 2/16/24. I am currently receiving chemo (which I didn't. have in 2017). The biomarker EGFR with exon 20 was detected this time so I will have some sort of follow up treatment after chemo.

@A MyLungCancerTeam Member,
While benign lung nodules are more common than most believe, that, along with swollen lymph nodes are a strong indication of cancer.
If you haven't had a PET scan yet, you should ask for one.
During a PET scan, FDG, a radioactive tracer is injected through an IV and then 45 minutes later they do the scan. The FDG is in a glucose serum and since malignant cancer loves sugar, it absorbs as much as it can, depositing the FDG in the tumors. The FDG glows on the pictures they take, thus indicating malignancy. A biopsy is required to tell what type and sub-type it is. As well as to check for bio-markers and genetic mutations to formulate a treatment plan.
Stay positive!
Tony
