How Long will I be out of work with having a Vats segmentectomy? It's very small from what I'm told. Upper left lobe. I am pretty healthy otherwise. I am a runner.

Members shared their recovery experiences after VATS segmentectomy and lobectomy procedures, with most reporting hospital stays ranging from five days to a week and return-to-work timelines between two to six weeks, depending on individual healing and job flexibility. Several members emphasized that being physically fit before surgery, particularly with cardio training, significantly aided their recovery, though common challenges included fatigue, nerve pain, chest tube discomfort, and gradual return to exercise over several months. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, staying positive, and recognizing that everyone heals differently while fighting this aggressive disease together.

I had a lobectomy 4 weeks ago and will be going back to work in a couple of weeks. I went to my gym tonight and did about 6 minutes on the elliptical, went slow, just felt some tightness in my chest, I will gradually increase the time, I hope. I did about 20 minutes on stationary bike, then did some weights and walked 20 minutes on treadmill.

I week from my RLL RATS resection. Feeling better quickly. Up to an hour on treadmill at a moderate walk, 3 mph. Surgeon suggested 6 weeks out of work. My side still gets tender 3 to 4 on the pain scale depending on how much I pushed myself. Deep breaths are still a bit difficult but improving. Coughs of course cause some pain. Overall way ahead of where I thought I would be. Sounds like you're already pretty fit. I did a bunch of cardio for a couple months prior to the surgery. I guarantee it has been a huge help in my recovery. I would recommend anyone that can get in plenty of cardio before surgery JUST DO IT! ๐Ÿ™‚

Scans are helpful, but they really need to remove the actual cancer tissue to know exactly what the treatment plan will be. Recover depends on that. If chemo and radiation are needed it takes months up to a year. It isnโ€™t until after surgery that they care develop the best plan

I had a lobectomy in 2022 and I was in the hospital five nights. It was rough on the then 75 year old man. Very sore afterward and I had a hard time doing much for a long period of time. Of course, younger people may not have as bad a time as I did. Breathing is not as bad as I thought it would be. Good oxygen numbers almost all the time.
