CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IT LIKE TO GET A PORT? iM SEROUSLY SCARED

I got a port in July of 2022. I still have it. It was a very minor procedure. I went to the imaging center here in Las Vegas and had it done. They made a very small incision on the left side of my chest wall above my heart. They inserted a circle devise that goes up to your main vain in your neck. They numb me I didn’t feel anything and I was awake for the whole procedure. I like having a port it’s very easy for the nurses to administrate medication through the port. I’m glad I got mine because my veins are very weak. I have a hard time doing treatments and giving blood without a port

What is it like to get a port, and what can be expected from the experience?

First of all, it's completely understandable to feel scared — a lot of people feel the same way before getting a port. The good news is that many lung cancer patients say it ends up being much less scary than they expected!

What is a port?
A port (or "port-a-cath") is a small device placed under the skin, usually near the chest. It gives doctors easy access to a vein for chemotherapy, blood draws, or other treatments — so no more repeated needle sticks in the arm. 🙌

What to expect:
- The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, so the area is numbed
- Some people also get light sedation to help them relax
- It typically takes about 30–60 minutes
- There may be some soreness or bruising afterward for a few days
- Once healed, most people barely notice it's there

Things to keep in mind:
- There is a small risk of infection, so keeping the area clean is important
- Some people feel a slight pressure when the port is accessed, but it's generally not painful
- Always let your care team know if you notice redness, swelling, or fever after placement
